Blake Jany

Blake Jany 🥶

When I started this newsletter, I had a vision.

I didn’t want to be the only one sharing MY wins ( and losses lol).

I wanted to build a community and get others involved.

So I reached out to over 150 salespeople in my network asking them to share a cold message that converted.

Today, I’m happy to share the first example from the community we’ve been building.

Ladies and gents, let me introduce you to Blake Jany.

Blake currently works at Forma.ai as a Senior BDR.

Let’s take a cold plunge into the email that he sent to one of his prospects.

Chapter 1: The email 🥶

Fucking work of art.

Subject line: Culinary arts

Short, simple, and clever, shows the prospect that they did research on them.

+99 to Forma.ai and Blake

First line: Hey Elizabeth, saw that you follow Cambridge School of culinary arts on Li- I’d bet you’re a great cook!

So far, the subject line and this ^ are what the prospect will scan before they commit to opening the email. Both of these talk about the prospect and prove that Blake has done some research on them.

Add another 99 points to Forma.ai and Blake

Okay now the rest of the body, Blake uses his creative juices in his brain to connect the prospect’s love for cooking and Forma.ai’s value prop.

Blake also keeps it simple, and straight to the point.

He then ends it with a soft CTA

“Worth checking out?”

You honestly can’t ask for more.

Chapter 2: The response

Now, if ANY of you looks at this response and considers this a Loss, I need you to go ahead and unsubscribe.

Seriously, I don’t want your negative energy around here.

me kicking anyone who thinks Blake didn’t crush it here

We’re often told that the only wins we can get in sales are when a deal is closed or a meeting is booked on the spot.

FALSE.

If I was Blake’s manager, the response above tells me 3 things:

  1. Blake is really good at writing cold emails.

  2. Blake just left a great first impression on this prospect, which in turn means he helped further improve our company’s reputation

  3. Blake can potentially book a meeting with this prospect in the future since now he built a great first touch point with them, should they ever become dissatisfied with their structure.

Chapter 3: Q/A

I had some questions for Blake after seeing how good of an email he was able to put together:

1- How many emails do you typically send per day?

âťť

Anywhere from 10-30 emails a day

2- Out of those emails, how many do you personalize like the one you shared with me?

âťť

Nearly all are personalized, hence the smaller volume

3- what's your conversion rate via cold messages?

âťť

Conversion rate via cold message is very low. Single digit or less percent (Large enterprise deals with long buying cycles).

4- What are some areas you think you can improve on?

âťť

Punchiness and reducing length are always areas to work on for my own work - including this example. A good, sharp tie-in from your research to what we do is another area I can always be improving.

5- What's one golden nugget that's worked for you that you want to share with others.

âťť

I wish I had a golden nugget, but I think just following some of the newer standards for a good cold email have helped with my rates. Things like total length, short sentences, and a punchy hook into the value prop. None of which I can take ownership of, but have helped me

Takeaways

  • Blake is a G.O.A.T

  • Short and straight-to-the-point message FTW

  • Personalized subject and preview lines will help your message stand out

  • I wonder how can Blake scale this type of messaging ( something I want to think about more)
